Perfectly positioned across from the idyllic New Farm park is Joedy’s Cafe. Enjoy a hot coffee and a menu spanning everything from scrambled eggs to waffles as you take in the greenery of the park just steps away. 7. Baker D Chirico

Location: 18 Longland St, Newstead

There was plenty of fanfare when this Melbourne favourite finally opened its doors in Brisbane — and for good reason. With a sprawling fit-out in Newstead, this bakery specialises in European-inspired goodies, from cannoli and bombolini, to perfectly filled savoury paninis. Find a sunny outdoor seat and indulge in a delicious coffee as you make your way through the menu.

8. Superthing Bakery

Location: 215 Montague Road, West End

For whimsical pastries that will look excellent on your Instagram feed, try Superthing. A newer addition to West End’s thriving food scene, you’ll find everything from sweet danishes to savoury croissants and, of course, great coffee.

9. Kin

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kin (@kin.teneriffe)

Location: 24 Macquarie St, Teneriffe

First things first, the matcha here is second-to-none, from classic hot or iced, to more experimental creations. But beyond their beverage offering, this riverside hole-in-the-wall also excels at food too, from re-imagined dippy eggs to açai bowls loaded with fresh fruit and granola.

10. Swalk Cafe

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Brisbane Cafe SWALK (@swalk_cafe)

Location: Corner of Abbott street and Lancaster Road, Ascot

This Ascot local earned the title of Brisbane’s best cafe back in 2023, and for good reason. Their egg and bacon roles are famous amongst customers (and proven to cure all ails), but their menu also spans things like smoothies, parfaits and, of course, great coffee.

11. Idle

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Idle (@idle.bakery)

Location: 84 Merthyr Road, New Farm

A newer addition to the Brisbane cafe, but one earning a lot of (deserved) hype. Idle is the re-imagining of former bakery Agnes, but this time in a much bigger capacity. In the new space, you’ll not only find your old favourites, but you can also sit down and enjoy their expansive dine-in menu. We’re salivating just thinking about their selection of sandwhiches.

12. PawPaw Cafe

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Pawpaw Restaurant Brisbane (@pawpawcafe)

Location: 898 Stanley St E, East Brisbane

Southeast Asian might not be the first cuisine that comes to mind when you think of a cafe, but trust us, PawPaw Cafe is worth visiting. This sprawling space serves brunch by day, ranging from classics like avocado toast, to moreish chicken salad and fish tacos. At night, the space transforms into one of Brisbane’s best Thai restaurants, so you’ll need to visit at least twice to see everything they have to offer.

Soho House is headed for Melbourne https://www.russh.com/soho-house-melbourne/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 22:47:06 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274904 Everything that's been confirmed so far.

The post Soho House is headed for Melbourne appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
Soho House is officially heading to Melbourne after all, marking a significant turnaround for the private members’ club that once walked away from the city in favour of Sydney. After years of uncertainty and a very public planning battle, the global hospitality brand has now confirmed Melbourne as part of its future expansion plans. Here’s what we know so far…

Why were Melbourne plans originally dumped?

Back in 2022, Soho House’s Australian ambitions hit a wall. Plans to convert the historic Poolman House mansion in South Yarra into a boutique hotel and members’ club were knocked back by councils and met with strong resistance from local residents. Concerns ranged from zoning issues to fears about late-night activity, and despite an appeal to VCAT, the developers eventually withdrew the proposal.

At the time, attention shifted firmly to Sydney, with Melbourne seemingly off the table. Now, that story has changed.

What’s been confirmed this time?

As part of its broader growth push heading into 2026 and beyond, Soho House this week has confirmed it will open in Melbourne, alongside continued plans for Sydney. The announcement comes during a busy period for the brand, which is expanding rapidly across the U.S., Europe, and Asia following its $2.7 billion take-private deal. New houses are planned in cities like Tokyo, Milan, Madrid, and Lisbon, reinforcing Soho House’s focus on creative hubs around the world.

Why Melbourne?

Bringing Melbourne back into the picture feels deliberate. Long regarded as Australia’s cultural capital (with festivals like RISING stepping things up a notch) the city aligns naturally with Soho House’s creative-first identity, drawing members from fashion, film, music, media, and design. By committing to both Melbourne and Sydney, the company is signalling that Australia is no longer a “one-city” market, but a key region in its global network.

Details around the Melbourne location are still being kept under wraps, including where it will be based and when it might open. What is clear, however, is that Soho House appears to be approaching the city with lessons learned from its earlier missteps.

When will it open?

The official word from Soho House’s website is that plans for Melbourne and Sydney will be finalised “beyond 2027”. Which means we’re likely to see openings as early as 2028 for both cities. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.

The Christmas Day weather forecast for your city is here https://www.russh.com/christmas-day-weather-forecast-2025-australia/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 21:00:53 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274402 From Darwin to Hobart, here's how every Australian city will fare, weather-wise, on Christmas Day in 2025.

The post The Christmas Day weather forecast for your city is here appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
Ah, Australia. While much of the Northern Hemisphere rugs up in scarves and coats for a crisp, wintery Christmas, we’re more accustomed to sun-soaked celebrations — think spontaneous swims, fresh prawns, and champagne in place of turkey and mulled wine. It’s part of what makes a Southern Hemisphere Christmas so uniquely Australian: beach trips, backyard barbecues, and the inevitable challenge of keeping the pavlova from melting in the midday sun.

But even in our warmer climes, Christmas weather is never a guarantee. Summer storms can roll in unexpectedly, hot northerly winds can make even a shaded backyard feel like an oven, and the sticky humidity of December can put a dampener (pun very much intended) on outdoor festivities. With the big day creeping closer for 2025, it’s only natural that Aussies are starting to ask: what will the weather be like this year?

Luckily, early forecasts are now in, giving us a clearer picture of what to expect across the country. While some regions may need to keep an eye on the chance of storms brief showers, it’s shaping up to be a mostly calm and clear day for 2025. Whether you’re planning a beach barbecue, a backyard feast, or simply want to know how your outfit will fare, knowing what the skies have in store helps. Read on to see how your city will fare with each Christmas Day weather forecast below — and start picturing your ideal festive day under the Australian sun.

Sydney

High: 28°C

Low: 20°C

While the weather is set to be warm, early reports predict a cloudy with potential for showers and even some thunderstorms.

Melbourne

High:: 24°C

Low: 15°C

Melburnians will stay mostly dry and a little cooler this year, with cloudy conditions clearing throughout the day, and the potential for light drizzle.

Brisbane

High: 31°C

Low: 22°C

In classic Brisbane fashion, expect a warm, sunny Christmas day in the capital of the Sunshine State. There might be showers in the morning thanks to a band of rain across the southeast coast of Queensland, as well as increased humidity.

Perth

High: 32°C

Low: 19°C

There’s nothing but sunshine and easterly winds on the agenda in Perth.

Adelaide

High: 28°C

Low: 16°C

Despite a few clouds, there’s no rain predicted to hit on what will be a warm day in Adelaide. A sea breeze will also keep you from overheating.

Canberra

High: 30°C

Low: 13°C

Canberra will reach a high of 30°C in the afternoon, which might also encoruage some summer showers and a possible storm along too.

Hobart

High: 21°C

Low: 11°C

The coolest city on our list, Hobart will be treated to a few clouds, but it will otherwise be a fine Christmas day.

Darwin

High: 33°C

Low: 26°C

Over in Darwin, things will heat up, bringing the chance for tropical showers and thunderstorms.

When does the BOM release its Christmas Day forecasts?

The BOM will weigh in with its official forecasts on Thursday, December 18.

Melbourne is the epitome of being overwhelmed by choice when it comes to selecting a spot to eat. Its sprawling, world-class food scene is not to be underestimated – but where do you start when looking for a spot to book a long and luxurious luncheon with loved ones?

Well, fear not. Luckily for you the RUSSH team are experts (and by experts I mean a team filled with Victorian expats and Melb-ophiles who return there practically monthly), and we’ve scoured our phone notes and Photo Apps to curate a list of the very best spots in Melbourne for a long lunch, below.

1. Carnation Canteen (Fitzroy)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carnation Canteen (@carnationcanteen)

Open for lunch: Friday–Sunday from 12pm

Tucked into leafy Fitzroy, this sunny, glassed-in corner restaurant and bar is truly one of the best feeds you’ll have in your life. It’s a mandatory pilgrimage almost the entire RUSSH team has made now – and we still can’t stop talking about how damn good a lunch here is. Head chef Audrey Shaw has put together a stellar lineup of seasonal share plates, wines and cocktails. If the weather is lovely you can even opt to sit outside on their back patio, immersed in a herb garden. Their bathroom also features the most luscious soap known to man – To My Ships Of The Gods.

2. Gracie’s Wine Room (South Yarra)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by @gracieswineroom

Open for lunch: Friday–Sunday from 1pm

You don’t have to be as chronically online as we are to understand just why Gracie’s has taken off this year. It’s founder, Kelsey, has charmed us all through the process of opening it on TikTok, but the vibes and menu speak for themselves too. We’d suggest booking a table out the back of Gracie’s for a sunny afternoon spent yapping and downing aperol spritzes (along with some of their famed focaccia).

3. HER Melbourne (CBD)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by HER Melbourne (@her_melbourne)

You can kind of pick your poison at HER, which is what makes it worthy of our best long lunches list. If the weather’s wonderful, head up to the HER Rooftop to apricate with a couple of cocktails and small plates, or if you’d prefer to cosy up, the ground-floor HER Bar is moody and ambient. (If you stay long enough after lunch, they also have a 4-6pm happy hour every day). This place isn’t a well-kept secret though, so we’d suggest a booking for peak times – especially on the rooftop.

4. Marion (Carlton)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Marion Wine Bar (@marionwinebar)

Open for lunch: Every day from 12pm

Another favourite amongst locals, Marion Wine Bar sits directly on Gertrude Street, perfect for stopping in for a long lunch before or after some shopping or bar hopping. While the beautifully fitted-out bistro-style interiors are divine, we’d suggest snagging an alfresco table when the weather permits. If you head there early (around opening) you’ll usually be able to walk-in and snag a table.

5. Carlton Wine Room (Carlton)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carlton Wine Room (@thecarltonwineroom)

Open for lunch: Daily from 12pm

Love wine? Look no further. Not only with the incredible staff here guide you through every drop with expert ease, but there’s also a delicious menu to match. From small bites (their anchovy, fried bread, ricotta, and pickled cucumber is the stuff of dreams) to heartier mains, this is the perfect spot for romantic lunches and bigger celebrations alike.

6. D.O.C Gastronomia (Carlton, South Bank and Mornington)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DOC Gastronomia (@doc_gastronomia)

Open for lunch: Daily from 12pm

If you ask us, one category that Melbourne really excels in is food that’s delicious, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. D.O.C. has that philosophy down to an art. Here, you’ll find pizza and pasta executed just like the Italians do. Several of the locations also come with Italian-style delis attached, so you can take home something delicious for your kitchen, too.

7. Clover (Richmond)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Clover vin de cav (@clover.wine)

Open for lunch: Every day from 12pm

A modern wine bar set amongst the lustre to Swan Street, Clover opened in 2023 to heaving crowds. Reservations can still be hard to come by on weekends at a reasonable hour, so we’d suggest you book ahead for a primo time slot, but their wood-fired menu and extensive wines list are worth the minimal admin. The interiors are sleek and minimal – think lead-light windows, exposed brick walls and a long communal table down the centre (perfect for larger groups).

8. Pipi’s Kiosk (Albert Park)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Pipis Kiosk (@pipiskiosk)

Open for lunch: Every day from 12pm

There aren’t many spots around Melbourne with the kind of water-front views Pipi’s has. It’s glassed-in walls house a single-page menu focussed predominantly on super-fresh seafood. Despite its humble kiosk exterior, it’s surprisingly elegant while still being casual. The seasonal menu changes every few weeks – but we can’t go past their Friday–Sunday fish and chips special. Perfect for parking yourself with a glass of wine.

9. Gilson (South Yarra)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ALL DAY DRINKS & DINING (@gilson_southyarra)

Open for lunch: Every day from 7am until late

If hunger strikes while you’re on Melbourne’s south side, head to Gilson. This relaxed Italian eatery is the perfect place to sit back over some freshly-baked wood-fired bread and an Aperol spritz, before you tuck into share-style plates of pizzas, pastas, and everything in between — all while overlooking the iconic Botanic Gardens. There’s also always space for walk-ins, if you’re in need of a spontaneous Italian fix.

10. Builder’s Arms (Carlton)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Builders Arms Hotel (@buildersarmshotel)

Open for lunch: Every day from 12pm until late

This historic pub on Carlton’s picturesque Gertrude street has long had our hearts. In summer, it’s the ideal spot for an al fresco dining situation. But in winter, there’s plenty of warming meals to tuck into while you cosy up from the cold inside. But take it from us, you can’t leave without trying their whipped cod roe and flat bread.

11. Supernormal (CBD)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Supernormal (@supernormal_180)

Open for lunch: Every day from 11:30am

For times when you find yourself in the city, Supernormal is something of a Melbourne institution. Dimly lit and with a (delicious, might we add) menu inspired by the flavours of Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, and Hong Kong, there’s arguably no better spot for a special occasion meal. Pro tip: start with the New England lobster roll, and leave space for dessert.

12. Chin Chin (CBD)

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Chin Chin (@chinchin)

Open for lunch: Every day from 11:30am

Another iconic city spot. Chin Chin is a Thai-inspired eatery that sits on Melbourne’s Flinders Lane. Upstairs you’ll find a sprawling light-filled eatery serving up modern takes on classic dishes like Pad Thai and Fried Rice, while downstairs is a dimly-lit bar that comes alive with a DJ at night.

You still have a chance to see the Geminids meteor shower tonight — here’s how https://www.russh.com/how-to-see-geminids-meteor-shower-2025-timing-location/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 00:01:47 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=274563 The beauty isn't over yet.

The post You still have a chance to see the Geminids meteor shower tonight — here’s how appeared first on RUSSH.

]]>
The holidays aren’t here yet, but for the sky-obsessed amongst us, Christmas has come a little early. The best meteor shower of the year — aka, the Geminids meteor shower — illuminated the sky once again this weekend, and its beauty isn’t over yet.

Missed out on last night’s show? Not to worry. Here’s when and where you can still catch the magic.

Why is the Geminids meteor shower so famous?

Each December, this particular meteor shower delivers brighter, longer and more frequent shooting stars than almost any other celestial event.

So far, in 2025, stargazers in Australia have been treated to an especially clear show, thanks to minimal moonlight. This meant extra dark skies, and a particularly vivid light display across much of the country.

When is the Geminids meteor shower in Australia?

In Australia and New Zealand, the Geminid shower was its brightest and most active overnight on 14 December, and into the early morning of 15 December 2025.

The best viewing window occurred from midnight through to dawn, with the most intense activity happening around 2–3am AEDT. This is when the source point of the meteors is highest in the sky, giving you the best chance of spotting more shooting stars per hour.

If you miss the exact peak, all is not lost – you can still see it

The nights 15 December (tonight) is likely to also offer a strong display.

The exact hours viewing windows across the night and early morning of 15-16th December adjusted for local time in your city are as these:

Sydney: 11pm – 5:30amMelbourne: 12am – 5:30amBrisbane: 11pm – 5amPerth: 11pm – 4:30amCanberra: 12am – 5:30amAdelaide: 11.30pm – 5amHobart: 12:30am – 5amDarwin: 11.30pm – 6.30am

Where in the sky do I look to see the meteor shower?

You don’t need a telescope or special gear to see this. The Geminids appear to radiate from a single point in the sky called the radiant, which lies within the constellation Gemini. Think of it like the origin of the shooting stars — the meteors streak away from this point in all directions.

You also don’t need to stare directly at the radiant. In fact, the best view is usually about 45 degrees away from it, where the meteors are more likely to streak across the sky in a way that fills your vision.

A simple way to gauge this:

Find Orion — it’s one of the easiest constellations to spot.Estimate roughly 45 degrees from Orion in whichever direction gives you a darker, open patch of sky.Lie back, let your eyes adjust to the dark for at least 20–30 minutes, and enjoy the show.

Can I see the Geminids from the city? Yes, but less light pollution is better

Thankfully, those who live in populated areas still have a great chance at seeing the light show. That’s what’s so special about this particular meteor shower. Many of the Geminids are bright enough to be visible from suburban and even inner-city locations.

That said, you’ll always see more if you travel away from streetlights and buildings. You can try finding a dark sky reserve near your city for the best view. For example, if you live in Sydney, Palm Beach has been designated as an Urban Dark Sky Place. This would be the perfect location from which to watch the Geminids Meteor Shower.

What makes the Geminids different from other meteor showers?

While many other meteor showers are caused by icy comets, the Geminids come from debris left behind by a rocky body known as Phaethon. This produces bright, slow-burning meteors that often leave glowing trails behind them, making them easier to see with the naked eye.

The Geminids are also known for producing frequent bursts — meaning you can see several shooting stars close together rather than one every now and then.

Just when we were getting used to beach days and summer weather, parts of New South Wales are about to be doused with some serious wet weather this week. Yes, we’d suggest you invest in a good umbrella and maybe even a raincoat.

What’s going to happen?

A major weather event is unfolding as tropical moisture moves south and combines with a series of troughs bringing a heavy spell of rain across the state. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), we’re in for some much-needed relief, with widespread showers and thunderstorms from Wednesday through to Friday. This rain will reduce the ongoing bushfire threat as we head toward Christmas.

This is easily the most significant rainfall NSW has experienced in three months, with some areas expected to get up to 50mm or more. For fire-prone areas, this could be a game-changer.

Which parts of NSW will get the worst of it?

The weather event will affect the northern inland, central coast, and Sydney. Sydney could see as much as 100mm of rain, which, for the uninitiated, is about a month’s worth in just a few days.

When is it going to happen?

The first signs of this wet weather appeared on Wednesday 10 December, with thunderstorms developing in the north and east of the state. As we move into Thursday and Friday, the rain will become much more widespread, and will continue to track offshore on Friday night, with another light band of showers hitting the southern and central parts of the state on Saturday.

What does this mean for bushfires?

After months of severe drought and dangerously low soil moisture, this rain will hopefully be a welcome break. It will help to reduce the fire danger, especially in regions like the Central West, Hunter, and Mid North Coast, where ongoing fires have been threatening to spread.

While the rain won’t completely put out the fires, it will slow their progression and make them easier to manage. The increased moisture in the soil and vegetation will help lower the intensity of blazes, making them more controllable.

What’s next after the rain?

Unfortunately, while the rain this week will help lower the immediate fire risk, there’s no clear sign that we’ll continue to see above-average rainfall over the next few weeks.

Long-term forecasts show that hot, dry conditions could return by next week, bringing a renewed fire threat as we head into peak summer temperatures in January.

Still, in the short-term, NSW can breathe a little easier. The rain may not signal the end of the fire season, but it’s certainly a welcome relief as Christmas approaches.

The Aurora Australis lit up skies last night – here’s when to spot the next one https://www.russh.com/how-to-see-aurora-australis-australia-december-2025/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 23:05:01 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=273709 The skies are (hopefully) lighting up once again.

If seeing the Southern skies come alive in greens, pinks, and purples was on your 2025 bucket list, last night delivered just in time. Scientists predicted strong geomagnetic activity on 9 December 2025, meaning the Aurora Australis was visible across much of Southern Australia and parts of New Zealand.

When is the next Aurora Australis?

Unfortunately, displays like these are hard to predict. There is currently strong solar activity predicted to continue to the end of 2025, which improves chances of a vivid display, as do geomagnetic storms, like the one on December 9.

To know exactly when the next Aurora Australis will hit, you’ll need to closely monitor space weather updates.

Where could you see it

Southern regions had the clearest shots at the aurora, with those in Tasmania, Victoria, and South Australia poised for the best view. However, strong solar activity often pushes the lights further north than usual, potentially reaching southern New South Wales, Queensland, and New Zealand.

To make the most of an aurora australis, find a dark, open location with as few artificial lights as possible — beaches, hills, or open fields away from populated areas work best. The more horizon you can see, the better your chances of catching the full display.

What time to look to the sky

According to space weather forecasts, the best window for viewing was around 75–95 minutes after sunset, roughly between 6:00pm and 9:00pm AEDT. Keep in mind that space weather can be unpredictable, so it’s worth checking live updates over the next 24 hours if you want to time it perfectly.

What actually causes it?

Last night’s potential spectacle was the result of a solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) hitting Earth’s magnetic field. When the charged particles collide with gases in the upper atmosphere, they create the shimmering green, pink, and purple lights we know as the Aurora Australis. The stronger the geomagnetic storm, the further north the lights can reach.

Melbourne is hosting its very own Josh O’Connor lookalike contest https://www.russh.com/josh-oconnor-lookalike-contest-melbourne-2025/ Thu, 04 Dec 2025 20:43:51 +0000 https://www.russh.com/?p=273481 And a $500 prize is on the line.

If you’ve ever dreamt of finding yourself thrust into a sea of floppy-haired, lanky, perhaps slightly awkward (but in an endearing way) men, you’re in luck. Melbourne is reviving celebrity lookalike contest culture, hosting its very own search for the best Josh O’Connor doppelgänger.

The event in question will take place on December 13 in Fitzroy’s Edinburgh Gardens, with posters plastered across the city this week encouraging attendance. There’s also a cash prize up for grabs, with the person deemed most Josh O’Connor-y to be awarded $500.

So far, Australians have been forced to watch on as the rest of the world partook in celebrity lookalike contests with varying success, so it feels fitting that we’re getting a go now. It all started back in New York in late 2024, when a chaotic Timothée Chalamet look-alike competition unexpectedly became a cultural moment — encouraging not only hundreds of Chalamet-coded participants, but an appearance from the man himself.

We’ve since seen searches for just about every internet boyfriend, from Paul Mescal in Dublin, to Harry Styles in London. More recently, a Jacob Elordi competition in Melbourne famously failed to attract a single actual contestant. As well-documented fans of O’Connor, obviously we have high hopes that next weekend’s competition will be a little more fruitful. After all, the O’Connor template is surprisingly achievable. Tousled hair? Easy. A cosy knit and perhaps a long coat? Already in your wardrobe. A mischievous smirk and an air of endearing self-consciousness? That’s half the population of inner-north Melbourne.

For those hoping the competition will encourage a surprise appearance from O’Connor, we’re less than optimistic. He’s currently in the depths of promotion for his latest film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, so a quick trip across the world seems like a stretch. It’s also highly likely that O’Connor doesn’t actually know this is happening – and almost certainly wouldn’t know how to react if he found out…

When and where is the Josh O’Connor lookalike contest?

For those wishing to participate, or simply observe, the event details are as follows:

Saturday December 13, from 2pm – 4pm at the Edinburgh Gardens Rotunda
