Aya Murai<\/a>, the Paris-based makeup artist believes less is more, keeps Egyptian Magic cream close at hand, and once watched Rosamund Pike dance so beautifully on set that the whole crew broke into applause.<\/p>\n

How were you introduced to makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a child, I used to play with my mother\u2019s makeup with a friend my age \u2013 we were always putting on lipstick, blush, even trying on her oversized high heels. It was so much fun to \u2018transform\u2019 myself. I think that\u2019s how my interest in beauty started.<\/p>\n

Who else shaped your feelings towards beauty and makeup early on?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was a teenager in Japan, I really loved this makeup artist named YuKi \u2013 her work was always in ads and magazines. I figured out where she studied makeup in France, and it inspired me to enrol at the same school.<\/p>\n

What about now, who do you admire?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christelle Cocquet, who I assisted for over seven years, has been both my mentor and inspiration. Everything she creates continues to influence me.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your makeup ethos?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Less is more. I always think about how to enhance each model\u2019s natural beauty in the most effective way.<\/p>\n

Are you self-taught, or did you undergo formal training?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I graduated from a beauty school in Japan and later studied at Christian Chauveau in France.<\/p>\n

Have you had any incredible career defining moments?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to pick just one, but assisting Christelle on the launch campaign for Herm\u00e8s Beauty was unforgettable. Seeing the large billboards in public was incredibly moving.<\/p>\n

What do you think is the purpose of makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Makeup should be a tool that gives confidence to the person wearing it.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your aesthetic or artistry signature?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Natural, effortless, playful.<\/p>\n

If you could swap bodies with any makeup artist for a day who would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are so many great artists I admire, I honestly couldn\u2019t choose just one.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s been your most memorable day on set?<\/strong><\/p>\n

During a Dior bag video shoot, Rosamund Pike performed a classical dance to music in front of the camera. When the music stopped, the entire crew applauded \u2013 it was magical.<\/p>\n

What is the single best makeup look of all time, in your opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The single best makeup look is Pat McGrath\u2019s work for the cover of ID Magazine<\/em>, September 2004. Jessica Stam shot by Richard Burbridge. It\u2019s incredible.<\/p>\n

And the best film makeup?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Japanese film Sayuri<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What makeup rule annoys you the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strange preconceptions like \u2018this colour doesn\u2019t suit Japanese people\u2019.<\/p>\n

If you could only have five products in your kit, what would they be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Egyptian Magic cream<\/a>, Hom\u00e9oplasmine, M.A.C Cosmetics eyeshadow in Coquette<\/a>, eyebrow fixing gel and a Hakuhodo brush<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What do you think is more important \u2013 technical skills, or having a creative vision?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Technical skills are essential, but balance is the key to everything.<\/p>\n

What does your creative process look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I start by reviewing the photographer or client\u2019s concept and mood board, study the model\u2019s features, then develop makeup ideas accordingly.<\/p>\n

Do you ever use face charts?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not often.<\/p>\n

Who would be your dream face to make up?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daria Werbowy. Her poised beauty really captivates me.<\/p>\n

What about lips \u2013 who has the best in the industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ho-yeon , who appeared in Squid Game<\/em>. Her lips are soft, full and perfect.<\/p>\n

What lipstick shade would you paint on them, given the opportunity?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A deep shade like Bordeaux or chestnut red.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the most challenging aspect of being a makeup artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Creating the best possible look under tight hair and makeup schedules.<\/p>\n
